Background The Health and Wellbeing Innovation Centre is one of three Innovation Centres in Cornwall operated under the Cornwall Innovation banner by Plymouth University on behalf of Cornwall Council , who opened the centres with support from Cornwall Development Company ( CDC ) and significant investment provided by the ERDF ( European Regional Development Fund ) Convergence Programme .
About ERDF Convergence The Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Convergence European Regional Development Fund Programme 2007 to 2013 is managed by the Department for Communities and Local Government . It is one of the funds established by the European Commission to help local areas stimulate their economic development by investing in projects which will support local businesses and create jobs .
Introduction : Based at Treliske in Truro , the Health and Wellbeing Innovation Centre ( HWIC ) opened its doors in January 2013 . The Health and Wellbeing Innovation Centre is a business acceleration facility that welcomes knowledge based businesses within sectors that support health and / or wellbeing . It is a state of the art three storey building with a fourth lower conference area and a total net rentable floor space of approximately 2,200m ² to include production / manufacturing units and a further 500m ² of meeting room / conference space .
Accommodating up to 70 enterprises , HWIC facilitates business growth by providing dynamic office space , access to individually tailored business support services , conference facilities , informal networking areas , first-class connectivity through its own fibre pipe and affiliation to a vibrant and collaborative business community . This includes a shared 20 desk workspace area ( Formation Zone ) to support the incubation of early stage businesses . business mentoring clinics , events and workshops , client peer-to-peer support and access to private sector investment opportunities .
Conferencing and Meeting Rooms : Close to Truro city centre and the main A30 , HWIC offers one of the best cutting-edge meeting and conference facilities in Cornwall , with a choice of rooms from a small meeting room for 2 up to a 110 delegate dedicated conference suite .
Environmental : HWIC has been designed and built to the BREEAM Excellence standard , one of the highest levels of environmental accreditation available for new buildings . This ensures a low environmental impact during construction and throughout its lifespan . The Centre uses 60 % less energy than a conventional office building due to its ecofriendly design , including a biomass boiler , natural ventilation and a water harvesting system . Many of the materials were sourced locally including Cornish Granite and sustainable Cornish Cedar wood .
