We-CARE Highlights SANNIHITA Team: Anubhav, Anurag, Manisha, Rishabh, and Archana Sannihita works with women and children at a fundamental level to help them understand the real issues, explore practical solutions, by • Involving them in research activity • Involving them in campaigns on women’s rights • Training them on gender discrimination • Spreading awareness about human rights. Before entering into the corporate world, it becomes a necessity for all the “Fresh Minds” to know their environment better, to understand the living conditions of the poor and down-trodden people and contribute towards their up-liftment in the future. Sannihita manages three shelter homes, of which two are for girls (in Tukaram Gate & Parklane) and one for boys (in Parklane). Most of the children were beggars who were picked up from roads or slums. The basic problem to be addressed during this project was to understand the living conditions of the children, make them understand the importance of life and teach them some basic skills that could help them lead a dignified life. The team visited all the three shelter homes and taught the children words, poems, small sentences and other useful things. The approach of teaching was indeed different and focused on making the children love what they are learning. This was made feasible by gifting them with surprises and prize distributions, teaching rhymes and lessons by video display, and organizing several extracurricular activities. The team dedicated the last few days solely towards slum visits at Bansilalpet, Ballaguda and Gaush Nagar. These were the slums from which most of the children were being brought to “Sannihita”. Discussions with the families about their source of income and day-to-day problems were being put to note. People who resided there had no permanent source of drinking water and transportation, which in turn resulted in high prices of daily-use commodities. Women possessed many soft skills but had little opportunity to showcase them and make a livelihood out of them. Towards the end of the project, certain pitfalls were brought to light and solutions for the same were suggested by the team. Brief: Teaching with a creative touch has definitely brought about a change in the perception of teachers in Sannihita. 23 iNM - Magazine
