As her brand grew, her items were selling out of the store. It was a bit like a sweatshop for herself. She also created some exclusive designs for the store itself. However, because of the similarity in the name of her brand and the store, her designer name and individuality became lost in Grit & Glory. At the same time, her relationship with her loved one back home was falling apart. After her experiences in New York and with her brand taking off, Emery knew that with enough steam, she could power ahead on her own. She had been turning down other companies and stores while at G&G due to her extremely loyalty to the women that brought her to New York, but now at the time when her life was drastically changing on a personal and brand level, she felt it was time for a change and thus, Made of Ash was born. Her items from GGG are still there, she still creates dark fashion, but can now expand more. She has the resources to outsource so she can create more individual pieces and host her work in different shops and sites. In her painful transition, filled with permanent change and heartbreak, Emery moved to Philadelphia for a breather and to hit restart. She was on a mission to create her own new and personal environment to reinvent herself and in some ways, her fashion line. Rising from the ashes, becoming anew. In her move, she has met some incredible individuals and has many plans for future work. In her new line, there are many more custom pieces. She is also creating higher end jewelry, instead of remaking the same things that she had before. With her new resources and new breath added to the line, she took off again. Her state of mind changed, Philadelphia clicked, and Emery found herself headfirst into her craft again, regenerating herself and making her line bigger, better, bolder, and more high fashion. Made of Ash represents the burning down to rebuild, with its higher end goth feel, it’s own devastation, creations coming from the embers. Emery’s work is a stand out in the higher end dark fashion world. Her work captures the imagery of her own personal mantra, “from which we rise.” There is hope and pain and beauty in her work, and for those of us who live and breathe dark fashion, it speaks to those that adorn it. Even those that may not be entirely into dark fashion by one glance at its stunning look and the emotion radiating from it can be appreciated by anyone. Currently, Emery is working on some local casters to create custom jewelry, taking older pieces and remaking them with higher end materials. Her focus is to revamp old designs, one of her own, the past, and new. She is also working on creating new outerwear, and clothing designs that have a more flare and drapery look to them, recreating used clothing and working with crystals. Emery also wants to keep some things simple; she plans InkSpiredMagazine.com 61
