Jim Louvau: It’s really cool that True Detective helped influence the records. Spencer Sotelo: Yeah, the demos that the guys were sending me that we were working on before I even had lyrics just had this eerie vibe to it. I was just so into the concept of the occult, and I thought that the music lent itself to that really well; so, I thought there really wasn’t any other option for me at that point and I was just going to do it. Jim Louvau: How long did it take you guys to finish the records? Spencer Sotelo: I would say it took four to five months to write completely and one to two months to record. The vocals and the story took one to two months to finish. Jim Louvau: Did you run into some snags along the way? Spencer Sotelo: Oh yeah, definitely, the guys did too. We were working with a lot of material as a band, writing songs and parts everyday for months on end. You can only imagine how many demos of songs we had a lot of trouble choosing which ones to use. Some stuff didn’t inspire me and some stuff didn’t inspire the other guys. I’d say the biggest snag we ran into was deciding which demos to turn into songs and which songs to use.
