using the magazine as the medium within itself. Brilliant. When did this epiphany strike? Mario Zoots: Yeah, I would say that collage is my primary medium. It’s mostly what I do, but in many different ways, whether it be magazines, sound, or sculpture. I’m continually trying to reinvent what “collage” means to me. With the magazine covers I wanted to dig into the content. I describe these works as excavations. Revealing light between the hidden and forgotten, infinite pages of eternal darkness. My friend, Brandon was over to my studio 20 InkSpIredMagazIne.coM once, and laying on my desk was a LIFE magazine that I had cut part of the cover out from, like a portrait, and it revealed what was underneath. He asked me if I ever considered cutting more into the magazine and working into it. I said no, I didn’t. About 2 weeks later, I saw the magazine again on my desk and I did exactly what he suggested. Thanks Brandon! Morgan Febrey: Most people have only two hands. With all the irons in fires you have, it would seem you have three hands, maybe four or five. What can the world expect from you in the future? Mario Zoots: I only have two hands. I recently was accepted into the Redline residency, so I’ll be there working for the next two years. More projects are in the works but won’t be revealed quite yet. Visit www.MarioZoots.com for more.
