Malaysia and the Washington, Sydney and Dublin Accords Malaysia, through the BEM is a full signatory member of the Washington Accord (WA) since 2009, and a provisional member of the Sydney (SA) and Dublin (DA) Accords since 2017. Being a full signatory of the WA, graduates of all BEM/ EAC accredited engineering programmes in Malaysia are mutually recognised by all other 18 full signatories of the WA, namely, Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong China, India, Ireland, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Pakistan, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Sri 6 18 VOL 2017 VOL 72 55 OCTOBER-DECEMBER JUNE 2013 Lanka, Turkey, United Kingdom, and United States. Every six years the WA membership is subjected to an international review process to ensure the signatories’ accreditation systems and quality of graduates are meeting the set standards of the accords. The Malaysian membership of the WA has been renewed for another six years until 2022. In addition to the WA, Malaysia is now targeting to achieve full signatory status of the SA and WA by 2018. The path to full signatory status of the WA was not an easy one. In the process, the criteria and process for accreditation have been much improved. As a result of the many instituted
