“Gotong Royong” is an age-old tradition practised by rural folks
in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. It is a collective effort
by villagers in doing simple community works such as road and
drainage improvement, school or surau repairs and general cleaning
that fosters a community spirit.
“Gotong Royong” was included as one of the national social-
economic shared-value items under the Malaysia National Culture
Policy in 1973.
