INGENIEUR Figure 2: Signify’s Interact Office helps offices become future-proof through connected lighting smart lighting in the workplace would have a positive impact on their employees’ well-being. Some of the perceived benefits of smart lighting in workplaces include reduced eye strain, better ambiance, less fatigue, as well as improved employee mood and focus. With the advancements made to LED lighting, developers and business owners are now able to create smarter and more comfortable working environments, which in turn helps to facilitate employee retention. Studies have also shown that the lighting of one’s office environment can play an important role for people’s health and well-being as it is closely linked to moods and motivations. This is why many companies are paying closer attention to not only the design of their workspaces but also the lighting systems that are being fitted into them. As trends continue to move towards more agile and flexible work environments, the need for smart or connected lighting systems is even more evident. This is due to the fact that offices no longer need to have the lights switched on in all sections and rooms for the entire day. Connected lighting systems also provide both employers and employees greater control over their work environment with features such as dynamic control of lighting via a mobile app, tracking of an employee’s location in the building, and real-time usage data of rooms and spaces. 6 16 VOL 2019 VOL 77 55 JANUARY–MARCH JUNE 2013 Industry4WRD: Advancing Smart Lighting in Malaysia Smart and connected lighting also aligns with Malaysia’s Industry4WRD: The National Policy on Industry 4.0.
