Figure 2: General scope of an accident investigation and reconstruction. 1. GATHERING EVIDENCE AT THE SCENE ● the scene (road environment). However, we will only discuss the scope of investigations that relates to the road environment which is undertaken by the investigation team from PWD Malaysia. In an on-the-scene investigation, physical evidence plays a very important role. This evidence should be carefully observed, located and thoroughly documented with detailed notes and sketches, measurements and photographs. Three main sources of information that are usually available are from: ● the victims and eyewitnesses, ● the vehicle(s) involved, and Interviewing Victims and Eyewitnesses In investigating serious accidents, the sequence of events prior to the incident must be established. Statements on what really happened may need to be gathered from victims and/or local eyewitnesses present during the incident. This is usually done through discussions or interviews. Although eyewitness accounts of the accident are important sources of information, necessary and this is usually based on reporting by others such as the police and the media. 9
