INGENIEUR New York Subway in the 1930s By Cheo Hong Keyong The New York City subway system, opened in 1904, is one of the world’s oldest public transit systems. The system was started in 1869 by Alfred Ely Beach, who built the first demonstration for an underground transit system propelled by pneumatic tube technology that was only 95m long, under Broadway Street in Lower Manhattan. The first underground line of the subway started operations on October 27, 1904, charging a fare of US$0.05 on the IRT Ninth Avenue line.
