INGENIEUR
New York Subway in the 1930s
By Cheo Hong Keyong
The New York City subway
system, opened in 1904,
is one of the world’s oldest
public transit systems. The
system was started in 1869
by Alfred Ely Beach, who built
the first demonstration for an
underground transit system
propelled by pneumatic tube
technology that was only 95m
long, under Broadway Street in
Lower Manhattan.
The first underground line of
the subway started operations
on October 27, 1904, charging a
fare of US$0.05 on the IRT Ninth
Avenue line.
In 1935, the R6 Car 1300
shown here was put into service
in New York for the city-owned
Independent Subway System’s
(IND) Letter Route in Queens and
Brooklyn. It was built by Pressed
Steel Car Company in Berwick,
Pennsylvania.
