INGENIEUR Factors Behind High Fatalities Among Young Motorcyclists By Nuur Sakinah Azman, Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) Photos by Safuan bin Nazari A s of 2015, there have been 3,816 fatalities among motorcyclists in Malaysia, all due to road accidents. It’s in the news every other day, be it during the rainy season or during fine, sunny weather. Of the 3,816 fatalities, approximately 36.27% of the motorcyclists who died are youths aged between 16 and 25 years old as shown in Figure 1.
