of Malacca holds the honour of being the
first engineer as Chief Minister in Malaysia.
In an interview with BEM’s Publication Committee
Members, Datuk Seri Idris Haron, an electrical
engineer by training, talks about the benefits of
his engineering background and how he plans to
make his mark on Malacca.
The youthful 49-year old Datuk Seri Idris Haron,
born in Malacca, has seen a relatively fast climb
in his career. After graduating from the University
of Texas, El Paso, USA he worked for LLN (now

in 2000 he became the first engineer to be
appointed as the Chairman of Alor Gajah District
Council. His task was to upgrade the District
Council to a Municipal Council. He succeeded in
two and a half years and was duly promoted as the
1st President of the Municipal Council. Due to his
involvement in youth activities with various NGOs,
he was recognised for his leadership abilities.
He was elected Umno branch Youth Chief and
