Only a small waste area is exposed for waste disposal at the landfill cell. T he Sanshui Sanitary Landfill was developed by Berjaya Environmental Engineering (Foshan) Co Ltd (or BEE, a wholly-owned company of Berjaya Corporation Berhad) in 2011. A 28-year concession was granted by the Sanshui District Government in the People’s Republic of China to BEE. The scope of concession includes build, operate and transfer (BOT) an environment-friendly sanitary landfill in the District. Sanshui District is located in Foshan City of Guangdong Province and has a population of approximately 650,000. The sanitary landfill project was designed based on China’s highest 6 22 VOL – DECEMBER 2015 VOL64 55OCTOBER JUNE 2013 environmental standards to replace old and unhygienic dump sites in the District. The Sanshui Sanitary Landfill was developed with an estimated capital expenditure of RMB273 million in five phases with designed waste disposal capacity of 10 million tonnes of waste. Phase 1 was completed in 2011 and commenced operation on July 1, 2011. A subsequent Phase 2 was developed and completed early this year to provide for additional capacity.
