Dubbed “Factory of the world”, Guangdong has the highest GDP in China with a population of 104 million. The Chief Minister notes that the Chinese investors are keen on setting up light manufacturing industry, notably electrical appliances such as television sets, electrical fans and refrigerators, and other consumer products. “It will be a hub for Southeast Asia market and bring prosperity to Malacca,” he proclaims. Port Development A surge of economic activities in Malacca is also expected with intensive development along the state’s 73 km shore line. The new RM40 billion Malacca Gateway Port has been planned for cruise ships to serve the tourism industry. Six existing ports will be upgraded and specialised to support relevant sectors. Linggi Port will cater for bunkering services and repair maintenance; Sungai Udang Port for military training, Tangga 86 VOL – DECEMBER 2015 VOL64 55OCTOBER JUNE 2013 Batu Port for oil and gas industry; Tanjung Bruas Port for cargo and containers; Umbai Port for the fishing industry, and Sungai Rambai Port for mining and minerals. With so many projects planned to move Malacca ahead, Datuk Seri Idris Haron will be having his hands full in the next few years. He sees a rigorous road ahead as he makes his mark on Malacca. “It is a tough job but I want to lift Malacca a stage higher,” he declares. Advice to Engineers Before ending the interview, the “engineer in the Chief Minister” gives sound advice to young engineers. “Go back to principles of engineering; serve with integrity and honour; do things systematically, have structure in organisation and be in the know of the whole process.” Recalling that he joined professional bodies at a young age, he encourages engineers to get professional certification as soon as possible. He adds that they must also walk the talk or suffer the consequences. “Remember those who live by the sword, also die by the sword,” he concludes. ~Inforeach
