INGENIEUR
(IV) Traction Power Simulation
Figure A7: Schematic Diagram of Electrical
Traction Vehicles with three-phase drive
technology.
Electrical train systems engineering is a specialty
within the electrical power engineering discipline.
Included in this specialized subject is traction
power system which investigates the power/
energy supply of rail traction vehicles (mobile
loads) through contact lines. This represent the
most unique challenge to the design consultant,
asset owner operator and public utility company
in terms of power system modelling, simulation,
analysis and design to meet the specified power
reliability and power quality criteria.
Traction power simulation is an indispensible
part of electrical train systems engineering and it
is used to assess the performance of moving rail
traction loads under various operating regimes,
namely under normal feeding condition (no outage
of power equipment) and emergency feeding
conditions (outage of power equipment) [4].
Simulation assessment of traction power
system is a time-based simulation that integrates
the train movement simulation with electrical
network calculation. Some of the industrystandard traction power simulation software that
are used by design consultants are RAILSIMTM and
MM-TRAINTM .
