Energy Efficiency Technology towards Sustainability

By Dato ’ Prof . Ir . Dr . Eric Goh , Universiti Sains Malaysia & Ir . Lee Kam Fatt , Institute of Quarrying Malaysia
The objective of energy efficiency is the reduction of energy consumed by equipment in successfully carrying out a range of tasks . Owing to the importance of the sustainability concept worldwide , equipment manufacturers have carried out extensive improved energy efficiency research towards economic savings whilst ensuring compliance with global environmental legislation . The pro-active Board of Engineers Malaysia and the engineering profession likewise are receptive to the implementation of innovative economic and environment-friendly technology to help enhance energy efficiency towards world class sustainability .

Owing to the challenging economic scenario worldwide , the industrial sector while trying their best to support sustainability , needs to be assisted by enterprising and resourceful equipment manufacturers in the design of the appropriate energy efficient equipment to get the task done effectively while minimising the owning and operating costs . At the same time with the added benefit of recovering more economic value at the end of equipment life .

usage of raw materials , machine production and overhaul phase ,
●● in-depth assessment of the carbon footprint of each transport machine with the aim of obtaining a practical perspective of the CO 2 emissions from the equipment , and
●● optimisation of equipment life cycle .
EFFICIENT EQUIPMENT SELECTION
Some of the key criteria to be considered for effective and economic equipment selection at any designated industrial site are :
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT POLICIES
Some of the innovative policies proposed for successful sustainability worldwide include :
●● optimum usage of energy during operations ,
●● transparent reporting of site conditions ,
●● working closely with internal and external stakeholders to create mutual benefits ,
●● product life cycle assessments to optimise
●●
Site requirements - Presence of multiple loading faces - Blending requirements - Loading area support needs - Environmental conditions at site - Material characteristics ;
●●
Equipment performance - Productivity ( tonnes / day ) - Cycle time / Speed
