Hello ISLA,

As the incoming editor of the Indiana Literacy Journal, I want to welcome you to our Fall 2018 edition. First, a big thank you to our most recent editors, Dr. Diane Bottomley, Dr. Scott Popplewell, and Dr. Jackie Sydnor from Ball State University. The journal has been revitalized as a result of their leadership and hard work. You will also notice the journal has changed names from Indiana Reading Journal to Indiana Literacy Journal. This change came about as a result of the International Reading Association name change to International Literacy Association.

I am certain you will be inspired by the articles our colleagues from across the state have contributed to this edition. Reading Amy Leitze’s and Rebecca Brown’s article on Breakout EDU will inspire you to try out their version of an escape room. Their article makes the case for true integration of technology and a step-by-step description of how their Breakout EDU worked with pre-service teachers. Carrie Rosebrock shares the journey she and her Brownsburg Community School Corporation colleagues are taking to focus on the “meat and potatoes” of the English curriculum. Carrie makes a great case for considering a “balanced diet” when working in the high school English classroom. Jeff Thomas, Joyce Gulley, Kristin Rearden, and Amy Broemmel provide another great list of science-related books for use in our classrooms. Their work has provided us all with a wonderful list of books that will engage our students with interesting texts that also provide reliable information on a wide-variety of science topics. Jill Raisor reports about a project with literacy totes as a vehicle to engage readers across generations in literacy learning and multigenerational engagement.

For those registered for or interested in the Indiana State Literacy Association’s 2018 conference, there is information about the keynote and featured speakers. The conference will be Saturday, September 15 at the Walb Union on the campus of Purdue University Fort Wayne. We hope you will be able to join this year’s “Hip Hop into Literacy” conference!

You are invited to write for the Indiana Literacy Journal. Guidelines for submission of articles can be found on page 6. You can submit articles with teaching ideas for literacy development, based on sound theory and research. Other types of submissions including teaching tips, strategy suggestions, and technology tools are encouraged. Multimedia is welcomed since this journal is published as an e-text.

Your Editor,

Sharon Daley, Ph.D.
