From the Indiana State Literacy Association Presidents

Fall 2018

Hello to all ISLA members,

As co-presidents of the Indiana State Literacy Association, we are excited to welcome you to the latest issue of the Indiana Literacy Journal. As you may have noticed, the association has recently gone through some major changes. In order to keep in compliance with the International Literacy Association, we changed our name from the Indiana State Reading Association (ISRA) to the Indiana State Literacy Association (ISLA). We have new branding tools, a broader focus, and a renewed energy to celebrate literacy with Hoosier children and adults.

In September, we welcomed over 200 participants to our fall conference at Noblesville HS in Noblesville, IN. Our keynote speaker, Lester Laminack, was as entertaining and informing as always. The educators who gathered to hear Lester were not disappointed!

This year, we have moved our fall conference to Fort Wayne, INto the Purdue University Campus. On September 15, we will welcome Pernille Ripp, as our keynote speaker. Pernille is the creator of the Global Read Aloud and author of Passionate Readers: The Art of Reaching and Engaging Every Child. Joining Pernille as presenters are Clare Landrigan and Tammy Mulligan, co-authors of It’s All About the Books, Ruth Ayres, author of Enticing Hard to Reach Writers, and Kim Strobel, a motivational speaker who will discuss The Science of Happiness and putting the joy back into teaching! We are very excited about the new location and our impressive group of speakers. Occurring simultaneously is Fort Wayne’s biggest festival, the Johnny Appleseed Festival. The location is right across the street from the campus and shuttles will be running back and forth throughout the day. We hope you put the date on your calendar and plan on joining us for this exciting and informative day! Registration is open and can be found at www.indianareads.org

With the reorganization, this is a fresh start for the ISLA organization. In September, we will pass the gavel to Kristin Patrick, a technology integration coach in the Noblesville school system. Kristin brings a new and renewed energy to the organization. She is very innovative and excited and has already started planning future events for ISLA. Watch for information coming soon about events!

As the time grows closer for the passing of the gavel, we want to thank all of you for the opportunity to be your co-presidents of this wonderful organization. We have enjoyed our time leading and planning the many conferences and professional development opportunities throughout our time in office. We will still be actively involved and are excited about the future of ISLA.

Best wishes,

Barbara Boggs and Kim Hinz
