From the Indiana State Reading Association President

Fall 2017

Greetings, fellow ISRA members!

As the President of the Indiana State Reading Association, I welcome you to the latest issue of the Indiana Reading Journal. You are in for a treat because of the hard work of the editors and contributing members. Despite busy schedules, these professionals have figured out a way to share their talents, and I am excited for you to see their work. We have much to celebrate in Indiana, and those involved with developing the literacy of Hoosier children and young adults top the list!

For the past year, it has been my privilege to serve the organization as the President, a term which began with the fun fall conference. On September 17, 2016, we welcomed over 425 attendees for a day hallmarked by the motivational Ron Clark as well as meaningful breakout sessions hosted by classroom teachers and college faculty. We ended the day with special guests former Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz and the 2015 Indiana Teacher of the Year Jean Russell. Participants were treated to a marketplace and food trucks. With the theme Bicentennial Bash: Celebrating Hoosier Teachers, we spent the day learning and celebrating together.

I hope you will join us again at Noblesville High School for our one day state conference featuring Lester Laminack. Other speakers include Kristin Smekens, Matt Miller, Dr. William Himmele, and Maria Walther. This year’s theme, “Reading Drives All Learning,” is sure to inspire you. Make sure you register soon to reserve your spot. Check out our web site at www.indianareads.org for more information and the registration link.

As we begin a new school year, we are excited to bring several new opportunities to membership. First of all, Tanny McGregor will return to Indiana in November. ISRA will also have an intern this fall who will be creating an online survey to determine the needs of Hoosier teachers and their needs in the development of literate students. The intern will also be working on a few projects inspired by a recent meeting between Executive Board members and representatives from the Indiana Department of Education.

Again, thank you for the opportunity to serve you as your President. I have enjoyed visiting with you at the fall conference and at our quarterly events. Your councils are doing excellent work, and I encourage you to continue to seek ways to include new members of our profession.

Best wishes,

Heather Schilling
