Finally, by using the buttons in the lower left and lower right corners, many things created outside the Seesaw platform can be added to the journal. When accessing Seesaw from a web browser on a computer, students can add previously created files, such as documents, Google docs, PDF, and JPEG files using the Add File option. This provides a way for students to add longer pieces of writing to their Seesaw journals.

One other popular thing to do with Seesaw is called “App Smashing”. App Smashing is a term for using one or more apps together in order to create a project. Any app that will save to the Camera Roll or will produce a link can be added to Seesaw. This opens up a whole new world of possibilities for products that students can create.

Shadow Puppet EDU is one app that I found to be very useful in the literacy classroom. This app allows students to create videos that are a series of photos with voiceover. Once we had created our videos in the Shadow Puppet app, we were able to link them directly to Seesaw, either right in Shadow Puppet or through sharing the link and adding the link into Seesaw.

Students used the Shadow Puppet app to showcase a book that they had read. They took a picture of the cover, discussed the theme of the book, and then showed images of quotes from the book that supported that theme and discussed how those images related to their theme. Personally, I used Shadow Puppet to send a read aloud to my son’s second grade class. They had been studying poetry and had asked that parents send video of them reading their favorite poems. I wanted the students to be able to see the text while I was reading, which I was able to do with Shadow Puppet. Figure 4 is a QR code that will lead you to the video I created to send to his class. This QR code can be automatically generated with Seesaw, so QR codes to your student work can be posted in hallways and on displays for others to access.
