Fuel Storage Facilities: A DPA LoC US$26.75 million project for construction of 60 million litre Fuel Storage Facility for Petrol and Diesel. Construction began in March 2013 and has been completed. Located at three cities viz., at Lilongwe the capital, at Mzuzu 200 km north of Lilongwe and Blantyre 350 km south from Lilongwe. The Lilongwe Fuel Storage was offi cially commissioned on 6 December 2017 by H.E. Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi and the Mzuzu and Blantyre Fuel Facilities were offi cially commissioned on 20 July and 21 December 2018 by Hon. Aggrey Masi, Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, respectively. Dal Processing Plant: A DPA LoC US$5.96 + 2.5 mn million dollar project for construction of Pigeon Peas – Toor Dal processing plant. Construction started in September 2015 and was commissioned in July 2016. The processing plants are located at Liwonde and Luchenza, 250 and 300 km from Lilongwe. Sugar Processing Facilities: A DPA LoC US$33.64 million project for construction of a Sugar processing plant. Construction began in March 2013 and was completed in October 2015. Offi cially commissioned on 15 August 2016 by H.E. Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of Malawi. Located at Salima, 100 km from Lilongwe in a Sugarcane producing district. The Salima Sugar plant has a capacity to consume 1250 metric tons of sugarcane per day in an 8-hour shift. The plant is fully functional and in the year 2017 produced 4,500 metric tonnes. The plant is expected to surpass this output by 167% to 12,000 metric tonnes for the year 2018. Supply of PVHO: A DPA LoC US$9.01 and US$13.90 million project involving the supply of Tractors, Disc Harrow, Heavy earth moving machinery, graders, bulldozers etc., A project of 2009 and handed over to Government of Malawi. Construction of New Water Supply System: A DPA LoC US$23.5 million project for the construction of a New Water Supply System from Likhubula River in Mulanje to Blantyre. The President of Malawi H.E. Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the project on 7th November 2016 at the Mulanje mountain foothills. The project is being executed by Indian contractor SMC Infrastructure Mumbai and is expected to increase the supply of water to Blantyre by 20 million litres per day. 55 percent of the project was completed by December 2018 and remaining is to be completed by June 2019. 2019 • INDIA-MALAWI • 19
