MISPRINT
Woodland Hills School
District at PITTcon 2017
The Pittsburgh
Conference (PITTcon) is
an annual event created
and funded by the
Spectroscopy Society
of Pittsburgh (SSP) and
the Society for Analytical
Chemists of Pittsburgh
(SACP). It is the leading
laboratory science expo in
the world and attracts over
16,000 participants.
As an ongoing initiative
to enhance science
education, the SSP has
Joseph DeGroot at PITTcon 2017
provided generous grant
in Chicago
funding to school districts
willing to implement
science education
programs. The SSP has been supporting the growth of an
elementary school science program called the Woodland
Hills Elementary Science Tournament (WHEST) and has
provided numerous grants to help sustain the program.
In March the SSP invited Woodland Hills school teacher
Joseph DeGroot to represent Woodland Hills at PITTcon
2017 at the McCormick Place Convention Center in
Chicago.
DeGroot has represented Woodland Hills by
showcasing the WHEST model to school teachers and
education professionals on a national scale as a result
of the SSP and PITTcon. “It is amazing to know that
the successes of our STEAM programs like WHEST are
inspiring teachers and districts from all over to follow in
our footsteps,” said DeGroot.
