West Jefferson Hills Historical Society Announces Winter Programs

The West Jefferson Hills Historical Society is planning three entertaining programs this winter . Each program will take place in the Community Room of the Jefferson Hills Municipal Center , 925 Old Clairton Road , Jefferson Hills . The public is invited to attend all programs .
On Saturday , January 27 at 1:00 P . M ., the agenda is all about chocolate . And what could be more delightful than hot chocolate on a winter afternoon ! The entertainment begins with a film biography of Pennsylvania ’ s chocolate king , Milton Hershey . Following this , attendees are invited to chat about the film and partake in a variety of chocolate treats . Before the program concludes , names will be pulled for door prizes which include a Milton Hershey biography , a vintage Hershey Chocolate cookbook , Images of America : Hershey , and chocolate .
On Saturday , February 24 at 1:00 P . M ., the Society plans a workshop on preserving family photographs . Lisa Webster begins the program with a brief introduction to a new Pittsburghbased company , Forever . com , which promises to preserve digital photographs for a person ’ s entire lifetime and beyond . Then participants will circulate in small groups through three learning stations . At one station , attendees may have up to ten photographs scanned and saved to a flash drive ; in another area , they learn methods for dating old photographs ; and at a third table they will discover the best methods for storing their printed photographs . Participants are invited to bring a flash drive and photographs to scan ( no more than 10 ). Flash drives will also be available for purchase at a nominal cost .
On Wednesday , March 28 at 7:00 P . M ., Mary Jo Sonntag , Pittsburgh author and storyteller , will share entertaining tales and tidbits about the experiences of her adventurous ancestors who traveled to the Southwest during the western expansion of the United States . Ms . Sonntag and her mother pieced together the fascinating story of her pioneer family after discovering a chest of her family ’ s correspondence that had been written from 1842-1962 . The discovery of these letters and the family history research that followed resulted in Sonntag ’ s award-winning book Write , If You Live to Get There . The book will be available for purchase .
