in our area, and developing transition activities for entry into
kindergarten are just part of what our team will be working on
before our youngest scholars enter school this August.
The reconfiguration of elementary schools is the second
major initiative underway in our K-5 system. Gill Hall and
McClellan will become schools for children in grades K-2
while Jefferson will serve children in grades 3-5 at the start
of the 2018-2019 school year. Not only does the district gain
operational efficiency with this model, but we can also improve
the consistency of programs for all children, balance class size
and, most importantly, innovate our programs for children.
Again, teams of teachers and administrators have been working
together to develop a system that innovates through consistent
and proven practices such as small-group reading and math
instruction, writing, science and more all in an attempt to truly
personalize a child’s learning experience.
As with full-day kindergarten, there is much work to continue
with this initiative. Over the coming months, we will be
collaborating with the Parent Teacher Associations of each of
42 WEST JEFFERSON HILLS
the three schools to engage them throughout the transition
process. Curriculum and professional development will continue
to occur as grade-level teams are established. Our ultimate goal
through the transition process is to launch “Rise Up Jaguars” in
late May where students will have a day to meet their teachers
and classmates for next school year. Students will have the
opportunity to tour their school and become familiar with their
soon-to-be surroundings.
Full-day kindergarten and the reconfiguration of schools are
tremendous opportunities to redefine who we are as a district
and the types of programs we provide to all children. While
change causes anxiety and discontent for some, I continue to
be impressed with the greatness of the people in this school
district. Principals, staff, teachers, children, the School Board
and parents are optimistic and hopeful about the future of
the West Jefferson Hills School District. So it seems very fitting
that, during this season of renewal, growth, and transition, our
school district is looking to its future with a renewed sense of
determination, purpose, and focus.
