PHMS is “ All About Pittsburgh !”
Each school year , Pleasant Hills Middle School students and staff focus on a central theme or topic as part of the school-wide unit . The theme for 2016-17 is “ All Things Pittsburgh .” Students and teachers spend time in all classes studying the historical , cultural , and present day “ things ” that make Pittsburgh a special place . The school unit kicked off with a Pierogi Race involving students and Vice Principal Adam Zunic . Students read the novel , “ Macaroni Boy ,” set in Pittsburgh ' s Strip District during the Depression . Metz Food Services offered “ Tastes of Pittsburgh ” menu items during the week including Primanti ’ s style sandwiches , pierogies , and Potato Patch Fries . Thanks to the TJ Arts Foundation , the CLO Production of “ Steel ” was performed for all three grade levels . The musical recalls the steelworkers ' role in the industry and the town that steel built . The unit will conclude with student tours of Pittsburgh provided by Just Ducky Tours and a trip on the Mon Incline for a photo opportunity with their friends from the Mt . Washington overlook .
