T he Fairview High School (FHS) marching band embarked on a Hawaiian adventure that included 45 marching band members, 30 chaperones and covered 9,258 miles. The trip that took them halfway around the world afforded them the honor of being one of 12 high school groups from around the United States to participate in the annual Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Oahu. The FHS marching band was extended a special invitation by the selection committee that organizes the Pearl Harbor memorial activities every year to participate in the parade and some of the other tributes planned around the anniversary of the attack. “We were unknowingly scouted and recommended to the Pearl Harbor Celebration Committee. It was a total surprise,” says Chad Mummert, Director of FHS Concert and Marching Band for the past 19 years. After gaining approval and support from the Fairview School Board, the students began an aggressive fundraising effort to help offset the expensive travel costs. The marching band members sold mums, had a car wash, held a luau and partnered with local businesses like Bourbon Barrel to raise money. 12 724.942.0940 TO ADVERTISE ❘ icmags.com
