overshadowing the sun during
the “Great American” total solar
eclipse.
A total solar eclipse appears when
the Earth, moon and sun align in
such a way that the moon covers
the disks of the sun, causing a
short period of darkness when day
seemingly turns into night. This
span of time, known as totality,
was visible Aug. 21 on a path
that spanned across the country,
from northern Oregon to South
Carolina.
Although San Francisco didn’t
fall on the path of totality, the
skies above us were filled with
an essence of drama that even
Karl the Fog couldn’t keep away.
During its peak, shortly after 10
a.m., the alignment of the moon
caused a partial totality, giving
