Building Autism Awareness District Wide

South Fayette continues to support and build Autism Awareness by participating in the annual “ Light It Up Blue ” day . Students in Nicole Simon ’ s high school Library Club designed and sold shirts for staff and students to wear , not only on April 3 , when the District recognized World Autism Awareness Day , but throughout the month of April . Staff were encouraged to wear blue and jeans every Tuesday to raise awareness and funds for Autism Speaks , which is “ dedicated to promoting solutions , across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan , for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support ; increasing understanding and acceptance of people with autism spectrum disorder ; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related condition ” ( Autism Speaks website ).

Students in the Intermediate Lion Hearts Club led efforts to build awareness for autism by working on a school wide project . Throughout the Intermediate School , students created puzzle pieces by coloring them and writing an adjective that shows how they are unique . Each puzzle piece now plays a part in the “ Growing Our Awareness ” display , which is located in the main lobby of the Intermediate School . Lion Heart members also sold blue bracelets to benefit Autism Speaks . Throughout the month of April , the South Fayette Township School District was able to raise $ 5,900 to donate to the Pittsburgh branch of Autism Speaks . We sincerely thank Nicole and her Library Club students as well as all who supported and participated in the Autism Awareness events throughout the month of April .
