South Fayette Elementary School Takes the Pledge with Dignity and Respect
The Dignity and Respect Campaign has become an integral part of the South Fayette Elementary School . The vision behind this campaign is to make the world a better place by taking the pledge to demonstrate kindness and respect to others . The Dignity and Respect Campaign includes 30 tips that you can follow to become a respectful and courteous community member . Some of these tips include : smile , say hello , be a relationship builder , be culturally aware , communicate respectfully , seek understanding , lead the way , and become a mentor .
At the elementary school , the 30 tips have been divided into groups of 10 to be studied more in depth in kindergarten , first , and second grade . In second grade , we focus on one tip per month . We explore what they mean through read-aloud books , which illustrate each tip and then have a follow-up discussion or project to accompany the tip . During the holidays , the second graders all worked together to show dignity and respect through random acts of kindness . The second grade teachers challenged their students to complete 11 different acts of kindness . After completing each one , the students brought in a light bulb they had colored and cut out from paper . The light bulbs were hung in the second grade hallway to celebrate all of the kindness we had demonstrated from Thanksgiving through Christmas .
To further cultivate a respectful and caring community , the elementary school has begun identifying weekly “ Dignity and Respect VIPs .” Students earn tickets for demonstrating dignity and respect in school , and every Monday teachers draw a card to select a student as the VIP . This student wears a special lanyard for the week signifying that he / she has shown dignity and respect . The goal of this incentive is to reward the positive behavior while also encouraging others to do the same . The elementary school will also begin holding monthly Dignity and Respect assemblies that will focus on some of the tips and identify the VIP students .
The elementary school is excited to grow our Dignity and Respect Campaign to promote positive and caring behaviors . We hope to build a strong foundation in our younger students that will be carried with them throughout their time at South Fayette Township School District and beyond . The Dignity and Respect Campaign is an important resource in fostering a safe school community .
