y name is Bill Waugh and I am proud to be the manager of
Dollar Bank’s newest branch in the Gateway Shoppes at
Newbury Market. As we approach our first anniversary, I
thought I would share some of my experiences and goals in serving
this wonderful community.
My staff and I believe all the construction surrounding our branch has
certainly impacted our opportunity to meet more of our South Fayette
neighbors. And this year, we are proud to be the presenting sponsor of
the South Fayette Community Day in August. I know by the time you
read this, the event will have passed, but hopefully we will have had a
chance to meet.
What is not new to the South Fayette community is Dollar Bank’s
commitment to support local causes and events that make this
community so successful. So here is something you may not know:

So why is that important?
As a mutual bank, which practices the purest form of banking, our sole
focus is to serve our customers, not shareholders. Dollar Bank strives to
meet the needs of Main Street, not Wall Street.
For me, that stands for three things:
• Strengthening our communities
• Investing in the people and businesses in our hometown
• Supporting a great quality of life
So here’s an example for each of those areas where Dollar Bank is
making a difference…
First let’s look at community support.
As a community bank, we don’t shy away from the region’s challenges.
When the Hill House and City of Pittsburgh set out to eliminate the
food desert that existed in the Hill District, Dollar Bank partnered with
the community to finance the building that is now the home of the
Shop ‘n Save grocery store on Center Avenue. That development has
become a thriving hub for that neighborhood.
Second, we are investing in the people and businesses from our
hometown.
A strong region needs healthy companies, an atmosphere conducive
to innovation and well-trained workers. Dollar Bank is proud to be the
community bank to provide the financing that transformed the old
Connelley School on Bedford Avenue into the New Energy Innovation
Center.
The center is now an innovation hub where industry-leading
technology companies and our universities work side by side,
developing and demonstrating new technology. They translate them
into training programs that will equip men and women with new skills
for new jobs in the region’s new economy. The jobs that result from
this training are life changing for many of these individuals. It’s the
difference between earning a minimum wage or having a skilled job
paying over $25 an hour and a career. When the job training program
is fully developed, it is expected to train about 2,500 people annually.
Finally, let’s address creating a great quality of life for our
residents.
It can’t be all work and no play. Dollar Bank is proud to help provide a
great quality of life by sponsoring some of the most iconic events in
the region: The Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, The Dollar Bank
Junior Great Race, the City of Pittsburgh’s Summertime Cinema in the
Park, The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, The Richard S. Caliguiri
Great Race, and now the South Fayette Community Day.
