Cleaning up Shaler
Abandon and Junk vehicle sweep to begin.
Abandon and Junk vehicles are an eyesore and they threaten the
character and safety of Shaler Township neighborhoods.
Residents can report these vehicles to the Shaler Township Police
Department at 9-1-1 or the online anonymous tip form. Every
effort will be made to contact the vehicle and property owners to
correct the situation.
What is an abandoned or junk motor vehicle or motorcycle?
Presumption of abandonment-
A motor vehicle shall be presumed to be abandoned under any
of the following circumstances, but the presumption is rebuttable
by a preponderance of the evidence:
1. The vehicle is physically inoperable and is left unattended on
a highway or other public property for more than 48 hours.
2. The vehicle has remained illegally on a highway or other
public property for a period of more than 48 hours.
3. The vehicle is left unattended on or along a highway or other
public property for more than 48 hours and does not bear all
of the following:
a. A valid registration plate.
b. A certificate of inspection.
c. An ascertainable vehicle identification number.
4. The vehicle has remained on private property without the
consent of the owner or person in control of the property for
more than 48 hours.
When is a motor vehicle considered to be inoperable?
• A motor vehicle that does not have a current registration
plate and a current inspection sticker; or
• A motor vehicle that does not have the required number
of wheels or tires, does not have one or more of its doors or
windows, does not have an engine or does not have a battery,
or lacks any part which is necessary to self-propel it.
Nuisance Motor Vehicle
• Any condition of a motor vehicle which shall constitute a
threat or potential threat to the health, safety or welfare to the
residents of Shaler Township.
• These vehicles can be towed immediately if they are parked on
a public street and the responding officer deems it necessary
for public safety.
Notice to remove
• Shaler Township Police Officers are hereby authorized and
directed to give notice, by personal service, United States Mail,
or by posting of such notice, to the owner or occupant, as the
case may be, of any premises or location where violations of
this chapter exist, directing and requiring such owner or
occupant to remove or eliminate such violation within 10 days
after the issuance of the notice
• Covering or draping of tarps over the vehicle or moving
the vehicle(s) to another location in Shaler Township does not
constitute compliance.
• Failure to comply could result in multiple citations in excess of
$1,000 being issued.
SHALER AND HAMPTON TOWNSHIPS
MERGE EMERGENCY MEDICAL OPERATIONS
On December 1, 2017, Hampton EMS in Hampton Township abruptly announced that it would no longer respond to emergency
calls. Officials from Hampton Township requested Shaler EMS to immediately become the primary provider of emergency ambulance
service for their community. We agreed and stationed an ambulance in Hampton Township in response. In early 2018, Shaler and
Hampton Townships created an Intergovernmental Cooperative Agreement to formally merge emergency medical operations for the
two townships. As a part of this agreement Shaler EMS will now be known as Shaler Hampton EMS.
Our name has changed, but we are committed to providing the same high-quality emergency medical care that Shaler Township
has come to expect. With the purchase of a new ambulance to meet the needs of an additional community, the number of
ambulances available in Shaler Township remains unchanged. We have increased staffing levels and continue to be staffed by many
of the same dedicated health care professionals who have served our community in the past. For Shaler Township, our ambulances
will continue to be dispatched from our station on Wetzel Road.
Shaler Hampton EMS looks forward to fulfilling our mission to all of the communities that we now serve.
