Janie Peacock Honored
with a Scholarship at
The Matrix Awards

uaker Valley High School senior Janie Peacock
recently returned from New York City where
she was featured on “The Today Show” and
accepted a scholarship at the Matrix Awards on
April 24. Peacock was one of only 19 students across
the country to be named a New York Women in
Communications scholarship recipient. The Matrix
Awards were emceed by journalist Katie Couric
and featured many famous presenters including
Savannah Guthrie, Matt Lauer, Judy A. Smith,
Gretchen Carlson, Susan Credle and Nancy Weber.
Peacock applied for the scholarship online, sent
in an application, transcript, recommendation
letters and an essay. She then had a phone interview
and advanced to the final round — an in-person
interview in New York City.
“The NYWICI scholarship has given me the
rare opportunity to be a part of a unique group
of women who I can learn and grow from,” says
Peacock. “Being at the Matrix Awards was an
inspiring experience. Hearing powerful women like
Gretchen Carlson and Savannah Guthrie speak was
encouraging and motivating.”
After high school Peacock plans to attend Pratt
Institute in Brooklyn, New York to study critical and
visual studies.
The New York Women in Communications
Foundation is the largest foundation for
communications scholarships for women in
the country, with denominations of monetary
scholarships in total of more than $100,000. Since
the Foundation’s formal establishment in 2000, it
has issued more than $1.5 million in scholarship
support. Scholarships are awarded annually based
on academic achievement, demonstrated leadership,
participation in school and community-service
activities, honors and other awards or recognition,
work experience, statement of goals and aspirations
