QV Teacher Visits
Kenya to Teach
Science Classes
Q
uaker Valley Middle School Teacher, Stacy Tessaro, spent part
of her summer break teaching science to students in Kenya.
As part of a 20-day mission trip in June, the QV 7th grade
Life Science Teacher observed six schools and multiple teachers, in
addition to teaching three science classes. She gained insight into
Kenyan teaching methods, their state curriculum and the difficulties
that teachers, schools and students face in that country and in that
culture.
Tessaro went to Kenya with her church, the North Park Evangelical
Presbyterian Church in Wexford. She is no stranger to teaching
outside of QV— including trips to Illinois, Ohio and China— but this
was her first trip to Kenya.
Tessaro reports, “It was a special joy to teach a chemistry class at
two different high schools as I appreciated interacting with students
and observing how they reacted to American style teaching. I was
able to employ many of the excellent practices that I have learned
from the Project Zero conferences and as part of the Culture
of Thinking at Quaker Valley. I am looking forward to having
conversations with my colleagues to explore how I might be
helpful in Kenya in the future.”
