The Junior Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh ( JMCP) is the only program of its kind in the region and one of the country’s few vocal training programs for youth managed by a symphonic choir. Founded in 1986 to serve singers too old to perform with children’s choirs and too young to perform with adult choruses, JMCP enables talented students in grades 9 through 12 to train with accomplished professional singers and music educators. Scholarships ensure that no student is denied acceptance for financial reasons. “These young singers are exceptionally engaged and motivated,” says Caron Daley, Music Director of the JMCP. “They’re game to tackle any challenge, and their enthusiasm and skill make for exciting concerts. We are very proud to share their work with the community.” Many former JMCP members have gone on to make careers in music, and many now sing as adults in the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh (MCP), one of the most celebrated choirs in the country. The JMCP has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Plum Creek Chamber Orchestra and the MCP. This season’s Junior Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh consists of 40 singers representing 27 schools. In addition to its fall concert, the group will be performing with the MCP in “Let My People Go: A Spiritual Journey Along the Underground Railroad” on Feb. 15, 2019.
