North Hills High School Musician Selected for National Band Ensemble

North Hills High School Class of 2017 graduate French horn player Emily Kaup was chosen to perform in the 2017 National Association for Music Education All-Eastern Honors Band during the national organization ’ s eastern division convention in Atlantic City , N . J . She was one of only 150 students selected from 13 states along the United States ’ eastern seaboard .

Emily spent three days rehearsing challenging music with a prominent conductor in preparation for special performances at the convention . She was recommended for the orchestra by Pennsylvania Music Educators Association ( PMEA ) representatives and eventually chosen by a committee comprised of music educators from throughout the eastern United States .
This latest accolade follows Emily ’ s participation in the PMEA All-State Conference during her sophomore , junior and senior years where she joined with more than 120 other talented musicians to form the state ’ s best high school ensembles for three years in a row .

Ross Elementary Students Raise Nearly $ 18,000 for Charitable Causes

Ross Elementary students and staff showed how much they care about others and set a building record of $ 17,759.26 in charitable in the 2016- 17 school year ! Various fundraisers organized by the building ’ s Student Council benefited March of Dimes , Make-A-Wish , Heavenly Hats , American Heart Association and families in need right here in our North Hills and Ross Elementary communities .

NH Students Selected as National Chemistry Olympiad Finalists

North Hills High School Class of 2017 graduates Anastasia July and Valeria Tupac-Yupanqui were two of eight finalists selected to represent the Pittsburgh section of the American Chemical Society in the United States National Chemistry Olympiad . They competed with 127 students from 21 local schools for prizes , scholarships and the opportunity to compete in the National Olympiad .

To qualify , the pair participated in the 2017 Secondary School Chemistry Contest sponsored by the Pittsburgh section of the American Chemical Society at the University of Pittsburgh .
During their sophomore years , both students completed honors chemistry and are currently enrolled in Advanced Placement chemistry . They were recognized for their outstanding achievements at the Society for Analytical Chemists and the Pittsburgh Section of the ACS Annual Awards Dinner on May 15 at the University Ballroom at Duquesne University . Valeria was awarded a $ 2,000 scholarship to continue her science education at the University of Pittsburgh . Anastasia also will be attending the University of Pittsburgh this fall .
The Annual Secondary School Chemistry Contest , which began in 1945 , recognizes outstanding achievement by students and their teachers as well as encourages student interest in chemistry . To compete , students complete an exam that assesses their knowledge of descriptive chemistry and chemical principles .
