The origins of IN The idea of a School of Design store has been simmering for a while. The 2013 International Charrette class was asked to produce “icons” of Copenhagen as part of their classroom deliverables post-charrette. What they produced became our first sample products for our awardwinning pop-up store exhibited at the 2014. Ian Gough Graphic Design | 2014 The following is an excerpt from an interview with student Ian Gough | March 2014. What was it about Copenhagen you were trying to capture in your icon? There was a lot of Copenhagen that inspired me. But the thing I noticed that marked a difference between Toronto and Copenhagen for me was the architecture and environments created for social interactions...courtyards, buildings, shops, houses, castles, sculptures, art, everything. There were beautiful old buildings draped in history and mixed with amazing design. Even the tiled roads were carefully designed to create an interactive environment. What inspired you to express your icon as an illustration? For me, it was more about the pockets of places where memories were made than finding one object that would represent Copenhagen. I believe many who visit there will add this courtyard to a memorable experience of that great city. Did the experience of participating in your first charrette and being in Copenhagen influence your thoughts and approach to design? Yes, during the charrette I believe everyone discovered a little bit about themselves and how to work under stress within a new environment. It also allowed me to gain a new perspective on who I am as a designer. For my icon I drew a line illustration of one of the many courtyards I came across with a stylized interpretation of the tile work. I wanted to capture the details of the historical buildings and the unique patterning in the tiles of the courtyard. It is a central meeting place for many people and a good memory I wanted to express. It’s also a place we don’t really have here in Toronto. Photography | Parham Didehvar | Graphic Design 2014
