STEPHEN MINISTRY WORKSHOP
On Saturday , Sept . 29 , St . John Neumann Roman Catholic Church ( 2230 Rochester Road , 15237 ) will host a Stephen Ministry Introductory Workshop from 9 a . m . to 1 p . m . Registration begins at 8 a . m . Light refreshments will be served . This workshop is designed to help congregations learn about starting a caring ministry , by equipping laypeople as caregivers to help others journey during difficult times of their lives . The cost of the workshop is $ 15 per person or $ 50 for a group of four or more from the same congregation . NORTH HILLS PITTSBURGH AAUW TO HOST FUNDRAISER
The North Hills Pittsburgh branch of AAUW will host a fundraiser , “ For the Love of Books ,” on Saturday , Oct . 6 , from 10 a . m . to 2:30 p . m . at La Roche College .
Three talented Pittsburgh women , Natasha Garrett , PhD , Kathleen George , PhD , and Rosemary Hanrahan , MD , will speak on a panel about their experiences as writers and their books , and answer questions . The panel will be moderated by Janine Bayer , PhD .
Most recently , George has written “ The Blues Walked In .” Garrett will discuss “ Held Against You : White Shields ,” and Hanrahan will speak about “ When Dreams Touch .”
Doors open at 10 a . m . for attendees to visit vendors and enjoy light refreshments . The authors present at 11 a . m ., after which they will sign books . Tea , tea sandwiches , salad , and dessert follow the book signing , culminating with announcements of silent auction and raffle winners !

5TH ANNUAL EMMAUS SPIRIT RUN COSTUME 5K & 1-MILE FUN WALK
Put away your everyday running gear and get into the Halloween spirit at the 5th Annual Emmaus Spirit Run Costume 5k & 1-Mile Fun Walk on Saturday , Oct . 20 . The chipped 5k loops around the scenic Three Rivers Heritage Trail with the start and finish line in the South Shore Riverfront Park in the heart of the South Side Works . A family-friendly 1-mile fun walk along the Three Rivers Heritage Trail is also available . The race kicks off at 8:30 a . m . Strollers are welcome !
This event offers prizes for overall and age-level winners , a spirited costume contest and post-race family fun , including pumpkin painting , Halloween crafts , photo booth , food and drinks , raffles and more ! All proceeds benefit the Emmaus Community of Pittsburgh , which provides homes , services and advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities . Greybrook Garden Club , whose members reside in various communities of the North Hills , will meet Wednesday , Sept . 12 , at 9:30 a . m . in the Fellowship Hall of Parkwood United Presbyterian Church , located at 4289 Mt . Royal Boulevard in Allison Park . Following the business meeting and a brief time to enjoy refreshments and fellowship , Penn State Master Gardener Bill Goff will present “ Perennials – Three Seasons of Color in the Garden .” Guests are requested to come at 10:30 a . m . for refreshments and the program .
The club will also hold a Garage Sale at the church on Saturday , Oct . 6 , from 8 a . m . to noon . Proceeds from this sale help support Greybrook Garden Club ’ s annual donations to conservancy groups and worthy community and charitable organizations . SHADY SIDE ACADEMY SENIOR WINS NATIONAL MERIT $ 2,500 SCHOLARSHIP
Shady Side Academy 2018 graduate Robert “ Robby ” Sveda of Pine Township was awarded a National Merit $ 2,500 Scholarship by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation .
Sveda was one of 2,500 students chosen from a nationwide pool of more than 15,000 National Merit finalists to receive the scholarship . The winners were the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments , skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies , as selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors .
Sveda is attending the University of Notre Dame this fall . n
