He’s a visionary, community activist and artist, who rose from humble beginnings to own his first shop in Royersford in 2010. Now, with an expansion into Phoenixville planned for September 2017, Michael begins to reflect on his life journey – the difficult times that defined him and finding the courage to persevere. “I grew up in an extremely abusive background,” he explains. “By the time I was 4 years old, I remember my father physically assaulting me and my mother. At 9 I was already in the juvenile detention system where I went in and out until I was 18. By then, both my parents had abandoned me and I was left to fend for myself. I didn’t have a support system, nor an idea of how to function. I started to get into trouble with the law again, which landed me in jail.” It was during one of those stints in jail when Michael discovered his calling. “I always felt like I had some artistic ability, but I was never encouraged or given an opportunity to express it,” he says. “While I was in jail I decided to take up barbering, and it all clicked. I knew I had found something that was special, something that was for me and that I could share with the world.” After his release Michael took his newfound passion and started looking
