Progressive worsening of vision typically happens when the child is myopic (medical term for nearsightedness). After a failed school screening, parents may chalk it up to a family history of bad vision and just accept that the child’s vision is heading down an unavoidable path. That would be a mistake, as we now know this thinking is wrong! Worsening vision puts children at higher risk for eye disease. There is no “normal” amount of myopia; even low eyeglass prescriptions increase the risk of serious consequences such as glaucoma, cataracts and retinal disorders. Progressive myopia can be slowed or stopped with myopia control from a young age. This will help children avoid a future of thick eyeglasses, serious eye disease and likely eye surgeries. Getting stronger glasses and contacts year after year is not addressing the issue, which is why active myopia management is key. When a child’s vision is progressively worsening, we’re doing a disservice to our youth if we do not attempt myopia control. Call Ortho Eyes for a free myopia control consultation to see how your child’s life can be changed. 453 Valley Brook Road, Suite 300, McMurray, PA 15317 724.418.2088 • www.orthoeyes.com PETERS TOWNSHIP ❘ OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2018 57
