MYTHS ABOUT CHIROPRACTIC DEBUNKED!
A
new patient presented to my office for treatment to his
low back. A weekend warrior, he hurt himself playing
basketball, and when the pain wouldn’t go away (and
at the instance of his wife!) he sought care in my office.
I asked him if he had ever been to a chiropractor before and his
immediate response was, “No, I’m skeptical about you chiropractors.”
I smiled at him and said, “Because once you start going, I’ll tell you to
keep coming until the day you die, right?” The patient chuckled and
acknowledged that I know the rumors, but more importantly, that I
can address these rumors. My patients trust me with their health but
most importantly, they trust me to tell them the truth. Here are some
of the most common myths about chiropractic that I come across
daily.
1. Getting Adjusted Hurts.
This couldn’t be more wrong! While people may be in pain
when they first come through our doors, there are many ways
to provide a safe, gentle, and effective adjustment to alleviate
a patient’s pain. As an added bonus, our office also provides
passive therapies like electric muscle stim, ultrasound, and spinal
decompression to help decrease pain complaints in the fastest,
safest manner possible.
2. Once You Start Going to a Chiropractor, You Must Keep Going
FOR-EV-ER.
While you’ll quickly realize how great you feel and how much
improved your overall function is with chiropractic, it will still not
require you to be in our office three times a week for the rest of
your life. The fact is, we release patients from active care when
their condition has been resolved. Those patients who continue
to schedule to maintain their health and well-being will often do
so at a frequency as little as once a quarter. Additionally, you’re
going to know if you’re in the right place to treat your condition
within the first two weeks. I’m not too proud to admit when the
care needed is beyond what I can provide. IF I can’t help you, I will
certainly get you to the appropriate doctor who can.
3. Treatment is Expensive.
Chiropractic treatments are actually less expensive than
alternative treatment options including but not limited to,
acupuncture, physical therapy, therapeutic injections, and surgery.
Additionally, many insurance companies cover chiropractic
treatment. Even if you don’t have insurance, there are many ways
to make chiropractic care affordable. Our policy has always been
that you shouldn’t have to take a mortgage out on your house to
receive appropriate care.
4. Chiropractic is Only for Adults.
Our office frequently sees children, including those who are only
days old. Many parents report positive results in their children
who are being treated medically for colic, acid reflux, chronic
colitis, growing pains, and bed wetting. In fact, many pediatric

specialists have come to understand how effective chiropractic
is for children and refer their patients to chiropractors versus
prescribing medication or treating with aggressive or invasive
treatments.
5. Chiropractic is Dangerous.
Chiropractic adjustments are not dangerous when performed by
a highly trained and knowledgeable doctor. In fact, chiropractic
should be the first line of defense, so to speak, regarding
treatment of common ailments such as neck or low-back pain.
Chiropractic has been found to be far more effective at providing
quick, long-term relief from pain complaints than prescription
narcotic pain medication. Currently, with the opioid epidemic we
face, chiropractic needs to be a patient and doctor’s first choice
to alleviate pain rather than consuming dangerous and highly
addictive narcotic pain medications.
At the end of the first visit with the weekend warrior, which
included an orthopedic, neurologic, and x-ray examination, in
addition to the chiropractic adjustment, my patient walked out of
the treatment room and proudly proclaimed to his wife, and the rest
of my office, how great he felt and that it no longer hurt him to take
a deep breath. Relief can be achieved that fast! When you become a
patient at Skraitz Chiropractic, you know that you are, quite literally, in
great hands.
