LOVE THY NEIGHBOR
City Mission in Washington County is
expanding services to assist a struggling
population in our area. Families with
children are the fastest growing homeless
population in the U.S.
According to the National Coalition for
the Homeless, 41 percent of the homeless
population is comprised of families, and
single women head 84 percent of these
families.
“Addiction, mental health concerns,
domestic violence, or the end of a
relationship can lead to a woman with
children finding herself without a home
for her family,” says Leah Dietrich,
Director of Residential Programs at City
Mission. “Single mothers are at a great
risk. If they don’t have access to child care,
that can lead to missing work and losing a
job—and without a financial safety net, it
can lead to eviction and homelessness.”
City Mission’s newly renovated Women
with Children Shelter, which is now
housing families, consists of 12 cozy
suites, each uniquely designed to feel like
home for a family in crisis. The renovation
project effectively doubled the mission’s
capacity to help mothers and their little
ones. City Mission will also provide safe
and reliable child care on site, which will
be a significant help for single mothers
seeking employment. There are child care
agencies in Washington County that also
offer that support, but Dietrich points out
it often takes time to obtain these services,
and City Mission is able to fulfill that need
for families on day one.
The new shelter will also help keep
families together, which can create a

foundation for solid parenting and a stable
future once the families leave the mission.
“Women in recovery in the Washington
area have very few options to continue
to parent while also working on their
recovery. At City Mission, we are able to
provide that support,” notes Dietrich.
“Our Women with Children Program
balances the needs of the women,” she
adds. “That includes recovery from
whatever brought them to us as well as
helping them build a solid foundation for
parenting in the future. We will be offering
addiction recovery classes, parenting
classes and codependency classes. These
classes, combined with one-on-one
support, including counseling, case
management and life skills, will help us to
move each family from homelessness to
stable independent living.”
City Mission is located at
84 W. Wheeling Street in Washington. For
