Scott: I’m from Squirrel Hill, and my business partner, Steve, is from Harrisburg. We met in college at Pitt. I was a business major with a minor in art, and Steve has a degree in psychology. IN Norwin: What made you go into the restaurant business? Steve: We both knew a fair amount about the bar business. One night we decided to quit our jobs and travel cross-country on tour with the Grateful Dead. We were like 23 years old. We talked business the whole time and when we saw coffee shops in Chicago, we immediately realized there was an open market in Pittsburgh. Then we did a lot of research and opened a ‘60s themed coffee house, The Beehive in South Side. IN Norwin: What projects followed? Scott: In 1996 We opened The Lava Lounge. The Theme is a cocktail bar set in a retro, 007 spy movie set. Sort of a retro high-tech secret chamber built into the side of a volcano. We then opened another retro bar—the Tiki Lounge. We decided to travel to Bali where we worked with artisans and a translator for three weeks, eventually all the décor was shipped back and installed in Pittsburgh. IN Norwin: How did you come up with the Double Wide Grill theme? Scott: The theme is a gas station turned restaurant. The menu is BBQ, Southern, Mexican and Caribbean. We thought the restaurant business would be an interesting challenge compared to our bars. Both of us are food and quality driven. Most everything is from scratch. An interview with the owners of the new Double Wide Grill in Irwin/North Huntingdon: Scott Kramer and Steve Zumoff IN Norwin: So now you’re in the Irwin/North Huntington area? Steve: Yes, we were looking for a new location and knew of the growth here, so we decided to plant some roots. We bought the former Teddy’s Restaurant and have now been open for about two years. IN Norwin: What do you see for 2018? Steve: This Spring, in the restaurant Parking lot, we will be having “Lucky’s North Huntingdon Dog Festival.” We are also having more fun things around the bar, including; Rock and Roll bingo and a DJ spinning ‘90s alternative music. In December, we introduced a new menu with what’s turning out to be some great new favorites. In January, we introduced our new “Server Excellence” training handbook along with our new general manager. Hope to see you soon!
