JAMFEST AT JERGEL’S
RHYTHM GRILLE
The fun and entertainment are back
again this year as the Spina Bifida
Association of Western Pennsylvania
(SBAWP) hosts its 5th Annual Afternoon
JamFest at Jergel’s Rhythm Grille in
Warrendale on Saturday, March 24,
from 1 to 5 p.m. This “friend-raiser”
event will feature great music and great
prizes—all for a great cause! The JamFest
entertainment will be provided by
Madeline Rae & The Daisy Chain.
Any firm or organizations wishing to
become a sponsor or make a donation

sbawp.org for further information. All
proceeds benefit SBAWP programs.

CONNECTION WITH
VILLAGE IN WEST
AFRICA
When women come together,
they make a powerful impact. A local
nonprofit event, Spina Bifida Association
of Western PA’s Girlfriends for Good
Annual Purse Bash, is a testament to that.
The Purse Bash, which was held on Nov.
4, was bigger, better and busier than ever
before. Attendees enjoyed an assortment
of spirits, hors d’oeuvres, vendors, auction
items, mystery grab bags, and wine
pulls—as well as a chance to win designer
purses and accessories.
Special thanks to Karen Brackett and
Norma Liebenguth for entertaining
as emcees again this year. Mark your
calendars for the next Purse Bash on
Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018. The second grade students of the Alpha
School launched into an exciting project
recently. They were introduced to Mrs.
Micheline Ouedraogo from Burkino
Faso, a French-speaking country in West
Africa. Two years ago, Mrs. Ouedraogo’s
sisters, Wendyam and Wendkouni,
started a school in the village of Tamssin.
Previously, the children in the village
didn’t have the opportunity to go to
school due to the long distance from the
nearest town. Having a new school in this
remote and impoverished area brings
great relief for the parents of that village
and opportunity for the children.
So far, the sisters have been able to
open one classroom with 27 students, all
in second grade, with the hope of adding
an additional grade level each year.
The school’s founders were looking for
a way to develop a connection between
children across nations and experiences
to help all involved grow, learn and offer
hope to each other.

Greybrooke Garden Club will hold
a spring plant sale on Friday, May 11,
from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at McCandless
Crossing, in the grassy area within the
circle in front of Bonefish Grill, between

The children of the Alpha School were
ready to help.
Alpha teachers Mrs. Devore and Sister
Diane Dunn launched the initiative
in their social studies classes and their
students received a visit from Mrs.
Ouedraogo, who delivered photographs
and biographies of the children in
Tamssin.
“We thought that it would be a
wonderfully unique experience for our
second grade here at Alpha to become
‘pen pals’ with the children in that
new school. We will be sending them
pictures and telling them a little bit about
ourselves.” explains Mrs. Devore. “In
addition, Micheline will be coming to
our social studies class for a visit once
in a while to teach us about her country.
The children are very excited to begin
this project and be able to learn about
a culture and community that is very
different from ours.”
This is a project that will grow
and evolve over the coming months,
encouraging children to think globally
and learn from each other.
Providence Heights Alpha School is an
independent, Catholic, co-educational
school for grades pre-K through 8,
founded and sponsored by the Sisters
of Divine Providence and located on an
historic 40-acre campus in Allison Park.
Since 1926, Alpha School has educated
children to be independent thinkers,
imaginative problem solvers, and caring,
compassionate individuals.

PRESENTS
SPRING SHOW
North Pittsburgh Quilters Guild is
a nonprofit whose goals are to further
the quilting skills and knowledge of its
members. Lectures and workshops are
offered by both nationally and locally
known quilters/teachers throughout the
year.
