FRSH Proud of EIGHT NATIONAL MERIT® SEMIFINALISTS

ranklin Regional Senior High School (FRSH) is
pleased to announce it has eight 2018 National
Merit Scholarship® Competition Semifinalists. The
students receiving this honor are Ashley Li, Anisha
Mandava, Scott Pike, Tony Qin, Alex Redling, Grace
Scherpereel, Lily Wang, and Everest Yan.
About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000
high schools across the nation entered the 2018
National Merit Scholarship® program by taking the
2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship
Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT)®. The nationwide pool

Five students from Franklin Regional
Middle School took home awards from
the Westmoreland Arts & Heritage
Festival this summer. The winners are:
Short Story Contest: 2nd Place , Celia
Bayer (Grade 6), Title: “Hippity & the
Many Colored Bunny”
Art Competition: 1st Place, Leann
Reiter (Grade 8); 2nd Place, Gabby
Salandro (Grade 8)

of Semifinalists represent less than one percent of
US high school seniors. To advance to the finals, the
Semifinalist must submit a scholarship application, must
have outstanding academic scores, be endorsed and
recommended by a high school official, write an essay,
and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier
performance on the qualifying test.

HUMMINGBIRD KIT PROGRAM
Takes Flight with PPG Grant
PG awarded Sloan Elementary School a $1,000 Innovative
Classroom Grant to obtain more Hummingbird equipment. The
grant enables teachers Ms. Kim Ord
and Ms. Carmen Loughner the opportunity
to continue the “Hummingbird Hangout”
for the 2017-18 school year. The
Hummingbird Hangout allows
students to use Hummingbird
Robotics Kits to create and program robots
built from electronic components and craft
materials. The Hummingbird Kit was designed at
CMU’s CREATE Lab, in a program called Arts & Bots.
