She’ll discuss what it’s like collaborating with accomplished female artists like Afua Richardson (All Star Batman, Mad Max, World of Wakanda) and Alitha Martinez (Iron Man, Archie Comics, World of Wakanda), Marvel’s decision to diversify its comics content and creators, her experience working on a Marvel creative team, the process of learning-as- you-go script writing, and more. SUFFRAGE AND SAPPHO: 75 YEARS OF WONDER WOMAN! 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 16 Wonder Woman first appeared in Sensation Comics in 1942. Now recognized as the foremost female superhero, she has influenced generations of creators and characters. Wayne Wise will discuss her history, the background story of her creation, and the ongoing story of her influence, both in comics and in the world. Wise is a comic book writer, artist, retailer and scholar living in Pittsburgh. He has taught classes on Comics and Pop Culture at Chatham University, and seminars on Writing for Comics at Seton Hill and Point Park University. He serves on the Board of the ToonSeum. LEBO COMICS FEST 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 18 This all-ages, after-hours party celebrates comic books and cartoons. Explore the history of comics with hands-on displays and activities for all ages from local Pittsburgh artists, comics experts, and arts organizations: • Comics Workbook and Pittsburgh Zine Fair artists Juan Fernandez, Sally Ingraham, and Maggie Lynn Negrete as well as cartoonist, illustrator, writer and musician Wayno will lead hands-on art activities. • Makeup artist Noelle Marinelli will do face painting. • Invent your own superhero with green screen cosplay. • See displays of contemporary comics, cartoons, and graphic novels and meet historian Bill Boichel, founder of PIX: The Pittsburgh Indie Comics Expo and owner of The Copacetic Comics Company. • Visit a pop-up display from ToonSeum, Pittsburgh’s Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, and meet executive director and historian John Kelly. • Costumes are encouraged and light refreshments will be provided. GLOBAL BEAT GLOBAL BEAT: CHINA 4:45 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7 Join your friends and neighbors for an all-ages, after-hours cultural get-together at the Mt. Lebanon Library. Explore a different country or region of the world each month through live music, food, dance, and conversation with the artists. This month: Purple Bamboo & Yanlai Dance Academy. LECTURE: CHINA AND ALIBABA 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 19 In America, Alibaba is known as China’s Amazon. In China, it is a synonym for e-commerce platform, allowing millions of e-shops to operate in the largest internet marketplace on Earth. Understanding Alibaba’s unlikely birth and bumpy journey to greatness will help us gain insight into a country in rapid transition. The evening includes the documentary Crocodile in the Yangtze, an intimate and candid story of Alibaba and its charismatic leader, Jack Ma. Immediately following the viewing of this film we will have an interview and Q&A with a husband-and- wife duo who own a successful business on Alibaba’s platform.
