Antique Appraisal
Road Show and
Historical Homes Tours
O
n Sunday June 11 from 1 to 4 p.m.,
the Monroeville Historical
Society will host an Antiques
Appraisal Road Show and tours of the
McGinley and McCully homes with
histories dating back to the early 1800s. At
the event, people with antiques can have
them appraised by Pat Golden- an
accredited appraiser with Golden Estate
Sales. The cost is $5 for the first item
appraised and $4 for the second and thir d
items. There is a three item limit.
This event was last done by the Society
about five years ago, with the first road
show dating back to May of 2010. “We try
to have events connected to history.
Antiques, of course, are a connection with
the past,” says Mary Lou Span, the event’s
Chairperson.
Monroeville is also very fortunate to
have two historical homes, the McGinley

House and the McCully Log House, both
dating back to the early 1800’s. These
homes were saved from destruction by the
Monroeville Historical Society and are now
owned by the Monroeville Municipality
and furnished as they would have been in
the early 1800’s. Members of the Society
will be available to give tours of the homes
while visitors wait to have their antiques
appraised. Of course, anyone is more than
welcome to tour the homes even if they do
not have antiques to be appraised. Visitors
are always treated to fresh baked bread
For the past seventeen years, Marilyn
Wempa has been an invaluable asset to the
Monroeville community and its many
organizations. Recently, she has moved
from the area and relocated to Virginia with
her husband. She will be missed by many,
including members of the Monroeville
Historical Society.
“Marilyn and I worked as a team over the
years,” says good friend and MHS Events
Chair Mary Lou Span. “I planned all of the
Marilyn K. Wempa
programs and she did the publicity- all
while being happy to pitch in, especially
when I, or other members, needed help.”
In simultaneously volunteering publicity for three local
organizations and being president of two, Wempa always found
from the on-site Beehive oven and fresh butter
made the old-fashion way.
During the summer, the Monroeville Parks
and Recreation Department offers tours that
can be setup by appointment. Visit

time to send notes of encouragement,
praise or thank you. “There will be a big
void in the volunteer fabric of
Monroeville with Marilyn gone,”
continues Span, recalling Wempa’s
nickname of “Marilyn the
communicator!” with a smile. “Any major
company or organization would have
been so lucky to have Marilyn all of these
years, and she was, without a doubt, our
gain at MHS! With all she did, she still
remembered to save a big slice of her
wonderful meatloaf with fixins’ for her
friends!”
MHS would like to take this
opportunity to thank Marilyn for her continued years of effort and
support, and wish her all the best in her future endeavors. She will
be greatly missed!
