Jennifer Reed started making beach glass jewelry in 1996 after her son , Spencer , found a piece of cobalt-blue beach glass and asked her to make him a ring . Being a trained metalsmith , Jennifer was happy to comply and discovered that the mix of sterling silver and the found glass was magical . As she made more pieces and the word spread , she couldn ’ t keep up with the growing demand and asked her sister , Terri Reed , if she wanted to embark on a home-based business . She said yes , and Relish was born .

Relish soon outgrew its humble beginnings as a makeshift workshop in Jennifer ’ s laundry room . In 1998 , the pair took a gamble and rented a retail and studio space on West Lake Road in Millcreek , just a stone ’ s throw from the very water ’ s edge where they grew up collecting the lake gems . After a few short years , Jennifer and Terri found the need to expand their small store and studio space . They bought a building at 3835 W . 12th Street , where Relish continues today .
The business has morphed over the years to become an American made art and crafts gallery . Although Terri recently left after 20 years to manage the Presque Isle Gallery & Gift Shop , Jennifer continues to create and sell original beach glass jewelry , along with gifts and home decor .
Little did the duo know in 1996 that they were instrumental in creating an industry worldwide . The addition of the Great Lakes Beach Glass & Coastal Arts Festival , held every other year at the Bayfront Convention Center , continues to promote the area as a prime beach glass hunting spot in the U . S . and brings people from all over the world to hunt these elusive gems .
While keeping the homegrown Millcreek business on the map is more challenging in these times of online shopping , Relish remains dedicated to making original jewelry , helping the community , and maintaining our precious coastline .
