Helping People Move Forward with Their Lives.
Positive
Steps Towards Healthy Aging
Healthy Aging, or Optimal Aging, is a
concept based on lifestyle choices. The
International Council on Active Aging
(2015) identified the different dimensions
of wellness including physical, emotional,
social, intellectual, spiritual, professional/
vocation, and environmental. This
multidimensional approach is unique to
each person and continues to evolve as
individuals age. It is important to strive for
balance in all areas with the understanding
that certain dimensions will take priority
throughout one’s life. But there are many
positive steps that each of us can take in
the journey towards healthy aging.
1. STAY ACTIVE
One significant piece to healthy aging is
involvement in regular physical activity. The
Center for Disease Control issued guidelines for

recommended guidelines. If you have concerns about increasing your
physical activity level, consult your physician or preferred healthcare

Active Aging Week. Find something that you enjoy doing, then get
out and move!

aging! There are several programs that can jumpstart the importance
of fall prevention/ fall awareness. Healthy Steps for Older Adults and
A Matter of Balance are two Pennsylvania state initiatives that are
offered locally. Yoga and tai chi are other options for strengthening
and flexibility. Falls prevention awareness day is scheduled on
September 22, the first day of fall. Consider taking part in a local
program scheduled for the day.
2. PROMOTE A HEALTHY HEART
To age successfully and lead a healthy lifestyle, it is critical to
implement positive changes that promote heart health. According to
the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause
of death in our country and here in our own community. However,
80% of these fatalities are caused by factors that we can control
by taking a multi-faceted approach in our daily lives to achieve
