Allegheny Health Network: Bringing innovative and expert care to your community Facing the Facts about Breast Health Breast cancer can be a devastating diagnosis. But fear of finding breast cancer can leave many women in the dark about the disease. Taking a realistic approach to breast health can be a life-saving decision. There are 3.1 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. today, in part because their breast cancer was detected early. This is why Allegheny Health Network (AHN) makes it easy to monitor breast health with exams and mammograms at every stage of life. With 26 AHN breast care centers it is easy to get a screening at a time and place that is convenient for you. Ten of these centers have 3-D mammography (tomosynthesis) for more accurate cancer detection. When more information is needed, AHN’s biopsy techniques include stereotactic biopsy, vacuum-assisted biopsy, and sentinel node biopsy. These are less invasive and provide more accurate results. The Breast Care Center at Allegheny General Hospital and the Wexford Health + Wellness Pavilion are accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers; validating the high quality of the diagnostic, medical, surgical, and radiation services. Surgical options for breast conservation Surgical options and care are an independent decision related to the patient’s diagnosis and care. Careful evaluation and discussion with a qualified breast surgeon is critical to this decision. Breast conserving surgery (lumpectomy and breast irradiation) has been shown to be equal to a mastectomy in overall survival rates. It can be used in the majority of early detected breast cancers providing a quicker recovery time and avoiding complicated breast reconstruction. Lumpectomy is an outpatient procedure and generally does not require reconstructive surgery. There are psychological advantages for the patient as well, who will see her own breast, and preserve her identity as she knew it before her diagnosis of breast cancer. Coordinated care brings peace of mind For many women, their health is a private concern, while others turn to loving friends and family and seek care at AHN Cancer Institute. Our cancer centers are community- based, offering a comprehensive range of medical, radiation, and surgical treatments. Medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, certified genetic counselors, surgeons, and radiologists, along with nutritionists, pharmacists, oncology rehabilitation therapists, and technologists all work together to develop a personalized plan of care for each patient. We believe that no one should ever have to battle their doubts and fears alone. That’s why every patient has a Patient Care Navigator. These nurses provide guidance and help coordinate appointments. They will help you understand what’s happening, so you regain a sense of control and experience less stress.
