I
f you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind educational experience for
your child, look no further than Young Scholars of Western PA
Charter School (YSWPCS), a tuition-free public charter school
serving Allegheny County.
Presenting parents with an alternative to the traditional
public school system, Young Scholars of Western PA Charter
School offers students a diverse, multicultural and academically
challenging education to prepare them for the challenges of
tomorrow’s world.
The school serves students from kindergarten through grade
8, and emphasizes math and science through a technology-
integrated curriculum. Every classroom is equipped with smart
boards, and Chromebooks are issued to every child in the
building for blended learning purposes. Class sizes are capped
at 20 students, with the average size being smaller so students
receive more individualized attention.
Young Scholars of Western PA Charter School also teaches
students two languages—Spanish and Turkish—starting at the
kindergarten level, so they can be well-equipped to interact
fluently in the business world. “When we first started, there was
a community survey that asked parents a variety of things; one
was preferred languages we should teach,” explains Mr. Adam,
CEO of the school. He added that YSWPCS also received a Federal
STARTALK Summer Language Program grant that is supervised
by the National Foreign Language Center at the University of
Maryland on behalf of the National Security Agency. STARTALK’s
mission is to increase the number of U.S. citizens who are
learning, speaking, and teaching critical-need foreign languages.
On January 13, the Young Scholars of Western Pennsylvania
Charter School Robotics Team (TIGER BOT) won first place in
the Western PA FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Grand Championship
at LaRoche College. This is a spectacular achievement, which
made the school community very proud. Robotics is one of
the extraordinary STEM activities at YSWPCS for extraordinary
scholars!
In addition to regular education programming, Young Scholars
of Western PA Charter School offers an extended-day program
until 5:15 p.m., which is free for parents. Students can and do stay
after school for tutoring, clubs, and other enrichment activities.
The regular school day runs from 8:12 a.m. until 3:28 p.m., and
YSWPCS has full-day kindergarten. There is also a Saturday
Academy from 9 a.m. to noon, where students of all grade levels
can take advantage of various enrichment opportunities. On the
athletic front, Young Scholars of Western PA Charter School has a
WPIAL soccer team available to students.

Young Scholars of Western PA Charter School is currently
enrolling for the fall school year and open houses are ongoing
for parents who wish to tour the facilities. Enrollment lottery
begins in early April and parents are encouraged to apply online
as soon as possible for the upcoming school year.
